The majordomo of the East River talk shop waxed lyrical today on a visit to the Hague:
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan warned the United States and its allies Monday that the legitimacy of a war to disarm Iraq without U.N. Security Council backing would be "seriously impaired."Ruh Oh! The prospect is keeping me awake nights.
"If the U.S and others were to go outside the Council and take military action it would not be conformity with the (U.N.) charter," said Annan, who was in The Hague for peace talks to reunite Cyprus.Zzzzz. Time for another resolution.
The success or failure of the international community to achieve unity on Iraq would have a major impact on its ability to resolve problems in Korea, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Annan said. And a really swell job the UN has been doing in those places too, Kofi.
"The better the consensus, the better the chance we have to come together again and deal effectively with other burning conflicts in the world, starting with the one between the Israelis and the Palestinians," Annan said. You've got to admit he has a talent for coming up with this stuff. Maybe he can get a gig at a comedy club?
